Name: Prof. B. O. Adebesin
Affiliation: Department of Physical Sciences, Landmark University, Nigeria
Section: Physics / Earth Sciences

B. O. Adebesin is a Professor of Physics, with specialization in Space/Ionospheric Radio Propagation Communication Physics and Aeronomy. His research interest is in Solar-Terrestrial magnetospheric coupling; Space Weather events and effects; ionospheric dynamics including irregularities, geomagnetic induced currents, and solar wind drivers of geomagnetic storms/substorms; with more emphasis in the equatorial region. He noted an acute shortage of ionospheric data/interpretation in the African sector, making the study of the ionosphere in this region, a bit tasking, in complementing global ionospheric studies. Consequently, he took over this task in ensuring that the African sector is well represented, by making use of the available data. This prompted some of his research works to revolve around, but not limited to, the African equatorial locations. He is an advocate for the improvement of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model, which is reflective in some of his research works. Adebesin do not only publish his results but also provides way forward at many instances, when necessary, especially relating to progressing the African equatorial Space environment. Adebesin is active in communicating science to the general public through conferences and seminars, and have a strong passion for observational research and modelling.

His quest for research had earned him both national and international recognitions. He is a beneficiary of the Elsevier Highly Cited Research Award, a recipient of the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) Fellowship Award to the Space Weather Research Laboratory, NASA GSFC, Greenbelt, Maryland. Within the same period, he was a Visiting Scholar to the Solar and Heliophysics Lab. of the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. He was ranked 353 among the 500 leading Scientists in Nigeria in 2019, based on the SCOPUS SciVal assessment. He was also ranked among the World Scientist on the AD Scientific Index Ranking 2021 and 2022. Within his current work place at Landmark University, he had received several awards, including Award of Recognition for Research Visibility, Meritorious Service Award, Most Impactful Staff Award, Best Lecturer Award, Selfless Service Award, among others.

Adebesin is a member of NUC Accreditation Team in Nigeria Universities, and an Assessor of candidates to Full Professorial Chair. He had also served as External examiner to Ph.D. candidates in like manner. Adebesin attended Conferences/Workshops locally and internationally both as a Facilitator, and participant. He won a grant from ICTP to attend the 19th International Beacon Satellite Symposium in Italy and the VarSITI Completion Symposium in Bulgaria. He is a Facilitator in 2017 at the first African Space Generation Workshop, organized by the Space Generation Advisory Council of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications. He is a regular Facilitator at workshops of the Centre for Atmospheric Research, National Space Research & Development Agency, Abuja.

Adebesin have served and still serving at various academic platforms within Landmark University. Some of this include the Pioneer Director, Centre for Research, Innovation and Discoveries; Director Academic Planning; Head of Department, Physical Sciences; and Head of Physics Programme. He had also served as Chair at various University Committee levels including Chair. University Research Board; Chair. University Research Ethical Committee; Chair. University Accreditation Committee; Chair. University Strategic Planning Committee; and many others.

Adebesin had over 75 publications indexed in databases including SCOPUS and Web of Science. He is a regular attendee of several policy workshops organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on moving the Nigeria education system forward, having served as the national Assistant General Secretary (and acting Secretary) of the Committee of Directors of Academic Planning of Nigerian Universities (CoDAPNU) from 2016-2021.
